pdf 1.25 MB Longitudinal Study to Measure Effects of MSP Professional Development on Improving Math and Science Instruction This workshop presentation tool helps build the understanding of how the educators can obtain reliable, valid data: to determine alignment of instruction with required standards and assessments and to determine the quality of professional development activities. The tool explains the process by asking two research questions: To what extent is the quality of professional development supported by MSP activities consistent with research-based definitions of quality? What effects do teachers' professional development experiences have on instructional practices and content taught in math and science classes?
pdf 118 KB Empirical Study of the Effects of Professional Development on Improving Mathematics and Science Instruction This project summary delineates the goals, design and the need for the proposed three-year empirical study of the effects of professional development on improving math and science instruction.

doc 74 KB Findings on Alignment of Instruction Using Enacted Curriculum Data: Results from Urban Schools Describes findings from an analysis of alignment between instructional content taught in middle school math/science and state standards or assessments. Results provide evidence of the applicability of the SEC alignment model for formative evaluation and for identifying variation in instruction and curriculum content in classrooms.
pdf 424 KB Measuring Classroom Practice: Lessons Learned from Efforts to Describe the Enacted Curriculum - The Reform Up Close Study This paper addresses the issues of reliability and validity surrounding attempts to describe instructional practices and learning opportunities. It draws from the data and experiences of researchers associated with the Reform Up Close Study (RUC) conducted by CPRE for the National Sciences Foundation. RUC examined the effects of state and district attempts to increase high school graduation requirements and other standard-setting activities in Mathematics and Science.
pdf 2698 KB Indicators of Quality of Teacher Professional Development and Instructional Change Using Data from Surveys of Enacted Curriculum: Findings from NSF MSP-RETA Project The SEC data provides a robust set of indicator measures of instructional practice. Through time-series data collected from math and science teachers in MSP-supported professional development programs and comparison teachers, the study team analyzed effects of MSP professional development programs. The brief findings highlight significant differences between comparison and treatment groups and significant differences in instruction following professional development. The findings include: more time in professional development for MSP teachers; greater subject content focus in professional development for MSP teachers; better preparation for MSP teachers; change in instructional practice for MSP teachers; increased alignment of instruction to standards.
